I choose the Robert E Lee statue that was located in Fort Myers, Florida was a statue that had a lot of controversy around because the past of the confederacy and what it meant in this age. This statue was crafted by Aldo Pero and the purpose of the statue was to give recognition to Robert E Lee who was an army engineer and confederate commander. This statue was being talked about whether or not that it would stay or that they would remove it because of the confederate background and what it stood for at the time. The statue was then vandalized and knocked down from it’s bolted down stand and was later taken away and removed from the property so it’s no longer there.
I choose this statue because it shows that in even a statue there can be such a meaning towards it from one point of view that is very negative and another that views it at positive. I like the controversy in the art way because it shows that everything and everyone has a history and that history can mean many different things to many different people. I have no opinion of this statue but it was apart of the history in America and how we’ve come far from the times when the man this statue was crafted for lived in.
I believe the meaning of this statue is just a monument to remember another human being even though you can appreciate the art that was put into making this statue look aesthetically pleasing. This statue was rather large due to the stand that it was on and it was put into a strip of land between two roads and had palm trees surrounding. While I believe there is a lot of controversy that can be said about the meaning of the statue it is still a wonderfully crafted piece of art that can be appreciated for the sole meaning of art.
